Learn Self Publishing - Walk-On Video

A creative and emotive character animation

The Challenge

Learn Self Publishing, a company dedicated to empowering aspiring authors, needed a video to open their annual conference on London’s South Bank. Famous for its vibrant and enthusiastic atmosphere, this event brings together writers from across the world to share ideas and motivate each other.

The organisers wanted a video that proved they understand the experience of being a writer, capturing both the exhilarating creativity of writing and the solitary challenges that come with it. The video needed to culminate in a rousing climax that would excite audiences for the day ahead, and provide a dramatic introduction to the event host as he walked out on stage.

The Solution

ead Ready Productions answered this exciting brief by crafting a unique animated video that explored the full spectrum of the writer’s journey. Production was divided into three key stages: Concepting (Art Direction), storyboarding, and animating. At each stage, the client was closely involved, providing feedback and ensuring the video aligned with their vision. This collaborative approach allowed for Dead Ready’s animators to unleash their creativity, while the client maintained control over the final product.

The result features author characters navigating their imaginations — from the wild expanses of science fiction to the magical realms of fantasy — while also depicting the grounded reality of writing in everyday settings like coffee shops. Live-action footage from previous Learn Self Publishing conferences was woven into the narrative, reinforcing the sense of community and bridging the gap between fantasy and reality.

The powerful, storyteller-style voiceover, added depth and emotional resonance to the piece while a rousing and dramatic music track rounded out this emotive and stirring piece, resulting in a video that energised the live audience.

The Result

Learn Self Publishing was thrilled with the outcome, praising the video for its ability to both meet their objectives and surprise them with creative flourishes.

Their feedback was glowing. Event organiser Catherine Matthews said “We’ve been working with Dead Ready for years and have always enjoyed the experience of working with them. Their efforts to understand our business and audience resulted in an excellent video and really showed how much they care about doing a great job.” The video successfully set the stage for the conference, leaving attendees inspired and eager for the presentations to come.
